Level Sensing

NON-CONTACT MOLTEN METAL LEVEL SENSOR

FEATURES

  • Operates either as “metal level low” or “metal level high” detector
  • Relay contact operates signal light and/or other devices when change from pre-set level is detected
  • Detects change of metal level from one-half inch (13 mm) distance
  • Resolution when sensor disk 1/2 inch from molten metal: ±0.08 inch (±2 mm) or better
  • Sensor disk operates at temperatures up to 1400℉ (760℃)
  • Recommended for use with molten aluminum, zinc, tin, bismuth and similar metals

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  1. High temperature-rated metal level sensor assembly with 5-inch diameter detector
disk at bottom and cable connection box with radiant heat shield at top
  2. Heavy duty, adjustable height sensor support bracket, retractable for cleaning
  3. Electronics enclosure measuring 10” X 10” X 4” with sensor cable input connection, detector electronics with height adjustment, adjustable timer, flasher, and interconnection terminal strip
  4. Tri-color (green-amber-red) LED signal light tower
  5. Five feet of flexible metal conduit with special low-loss cable for connecting level sensor to electronics enclosure

HOW IT OPERATES

Metal Level Low Mode – When molten metal level is at desired pre-set height, green LED on signal light tower is on. When level drops below pre-set height, relay contact turns green light off, amber light on, and starts adjustable timer. If metal level does not return to pre-set height after adjustable time period, amber light turns off, flashing red light turns on, and optional horn sounds.

This mode of operation is especially useful for manually operated casting stations to remind operator when to charge ingot into melting furnace. When operator responds to signals, temperature variations are minimized. Especially useful in conjunction with kW demand management systems such as Rayteq’s Fleet CommanderTM IDMSTM.

Metal Level High Mode – When molten metal level is at desired pre-set height, green LED on signal light tower is on. When level increases above pre-set height, relay contact turns green light off, amber light on, and starts adjustable timer. If metal level does not drop to pre-set height after adjustable time period, amber light turns off, flashing red light turns on, and optional horn sounds.

INSTALLATION NOTES

For maximum accuracy, sensor must be located no more than five feet from the electronics enclosure. Electronics enclosure is NEMA 3R rated and temperature inside enclosure must not exceed 150℉ (65℃); insulate enclosure from heat sources if necessary. Sensor relay output contact is SPDT (1 Form C). Sensor operates from 120 VAC power, 50/60 Hz. A 100+ dB signal horn is available as an option. Not recommended for molten magnesium or other fuming metals which emit metallic vapor that can conduct current between sensor disk and molten metal.
